I was a part of the course for a year, just after figuring out I didn’t want to work in media and leaving Media Practice degree and before deciding that London is the place to be and relocating to the capital. The Photography programme at UWE is relatively new, so it’s great to see how fast it has developed, rapidly earning place among the best photo courses in the country.
This year the students made a brave decision to hold their degree show in the Rag Factory off Brick Lane, just around the corner from the acclaimed Free Range Show. They took a risk to go solo, so they get a separate review!
Most interesting projects:
- Isla Mollen took a very simple, but visually-engaging idea, centering her work around the subject of facial hair
- Lucy Draper’s interactive installation challenges representation of women in photography, by allowing the viewer to ‘dress’ a life-size cutout girl in a selection of ‘clothes’ hung near by – very playful and fun work!
- Few documentary projects on display are worth a mention, particularly the work of Rob Jackson, Rebecca Holly and Jasper Fry.
